Looking to mod your mechanical keyboard with some PBT Keycaps? There are many different companies that offer replacement keycaps to your keyboard brand. Some offer regular double shot PBT keycaps and PBT pudding keycaps. For this review, we will cover Kingston's HyperX Double Shot PBT keycaps.
I ordered these keycaps just to see how they compare to the regular keycaps that come installed on factory mechanical cherry keyboards. Once I got my hands on the HyperX PBT keycaps, I really noticed the difference. The keycaps that come installed on factory mechanical keyboards are made of ABS plastic. The plastic does make the RGB lights more translucent and brighter. The drawbacks on the ABS plastic keycaps is that it does leave fingerprints and stains if you have oily skin or from eating while your gaming. The HyperX PBT keycaps are more durable and it doesn't have any glossy finish which I really liked about it. After using them for a few weeks, I really haven't notice any fading nor any residue from regular use. But I do have to let you know that these keycaps will only fit regular size standard keyboards and ten keyless standard keyboards. If you own a Corsair, Logitech, or Razer mechanical keyboards, a few keycaps will not fit on the bottom row. This is due to the non-standard configuration that these manufacturers have adopted. I installed these keycaps on a Corsair K68 mechanical keyboard and only the 4 keycaps will not fit. The four keycaps that will not work is the Windows, Spacebar, Fn, and the Right click key. So I left the bottom row with the stock Corsair ABS plastic keycaps. The keyboard looks great, feels great, and the RGB looks amazing even with the stock keycaps on the bottom row. So if you really want some inexpensive PBT pudding keycaps for under $30, then you can't go wrong with HyperX PBT Keycaps.
